What is Transpersonal Psychology?

What is transpersonal psychology? It is a scientific approach to the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. Research scientist and yogi Dr. Nitasha Buldeo uses her MSc in Transpersonal Psychology to inform a pragmatic path to health. By integrating the work of Maslow and Grof with yogic wisdom, she helps you reclaim power over your consciousness. …

Transpersonal Psychology

In our search for health and clarity, we often find that standard psychology only addresses one part of the human experience. As a Research ScientistDoctor of Natural Medicine, and Yogi, I view the human system as a whole. My approach is informed by a Master of Science in Transpersonal Psychology & Consciousness Studies, a field that looks beyond the individual ego to understand the full spectrum of human existence.

Transpersonal psychology is a pragmatic framework for achieving biological harmony. It bridges the gap between modern science and the profound insights of ancient traditions.

Expanding the Map of the Mind

Most psychological models focus on fixing what is “broken” in the personality. Transpersonal psychology goes further. It explores “peak experiences,” states of flow, and the deeper layers of consciousness. It treats your spiritual and mental growth not as a mystery, but as a functional part of your overall health.

My work is influenced by several foundational thinkers and traditions:

  • Abraham Maslow: Known for the “hierarchy of needs,” Maslow emphasized that humans have a biological drive toward self-transcendence.
  • Stanislav Grof: A pioneer in studying non-ordinary states of consciousness, Grof’s research shows how deep internal exploration can lead to profound healing.
  • Roberto Assagioli: The founder of Psychosynthesis, Assagioli taught that we can integrate various parts of our personality under the authority of a higher center of consciousness.
  • Buddhist & Yogic Psychology: These ancient systems provide the tools for interoceptive neuroscience—learning to sense and regulate the body’s internal state to maintain power and balance.

A Scientific Path to Psychotherapy

I integrate these transpersonal interventions into my psychotherapy practice. By combining scientific rigor with yogic wisdom, we address the root causes of discord in the body and mind.

Clinical Interventions

In my online individual and group therapy sessions, we use specific techniques to foster this integration:

  1. Interoceptive Awareness: Strengthening the brain-body connection to help you process emotions through physical sensation.
  2. State Regulation: Using breath and focus to shift from stress to a state of biological harmony.
  3. Meaning-Making: Helping you navigate life transitions by finding a deeper purpose and internal authority.

Research and Evidence

Transpersonal psychology is grounded in decades of research into human consciousness and behavior.

  • Self-Transcendence: Research indicates that individuals who experience self-transcendence report higher levels of well-being and lower levels of chronic stress (Reed, 2024).
  • Non-Ordinary States: Studies on breathwork and meditation—key transpersonal tools—show significant reductions in symptoms of PTSD and treatment-resistant depression (Grof & Grof, 2023).
  • Psychosynthesis: Clinical applications of Assagioli’s methods have been shown to improve emotional regulation and psychological resilience in high-pressure environments.

Reclaiming Your Authority

Health is not just the absence of illness; it is the presence of a fully integrated self. Whether through individual therapy or group work, the goal is to provide you with the pragmatic tools needed to manage your internal world.

By understanding the science of your consciousness, you gain the power to live a life of clarity, purpose, and functional efficiency.
