The Neuroscience of “Ayahuasca”: A Tool for Interoceptive Recalibration

Ayahuasca is a precision tool for neural recalibration. Research Scientist and Yogi Dr. Nitasha Buldeo explores how Ayahuasca uses chemical synergy to shift our internal focus. By integrating her research on interoception with Interoceptive Yoga, she explains how we can move from simple attention to true embodiment. Reclaim authority over your internal state and achieve …

The Neuroscience of Ayahuasca

In the study of functional health, we view the body as a precise biological system. To achieve biological harmony, we must understand the tools that allow us to recalibrate our internal states. As a Research ScientistDoctor of Natural Medicine, and Yogi, my work focuses on interoception—the brain’s ability to sense the internal state of the body.

Ayahuasca, often called the “Vine of the Soul,” is a high-precision biological catalyst. From the perspective of interoceptive neuroscience, it acts as a tool for both neural and somatic recalibration.

The Chemical Synergy: Precision Biology

The function of Ayahuasca depends on a specific chemical partnership between two plants. This is not mystical; it is a matter of molecular compatibility.

  1. The Vine (Banisteriopsis caapi): This plant contains beta-carbolines that act as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs). Their pragmatic role is to temporarily deactivate the enzymes in the gut that would otherwise destroy the active compounds in the leaf. This allows the medicine to reach the brain.
  2. The Leaf (Psychotria viridis): This contains DMT, which triggers a profound shift in consciousness and neuroplasticity.

Together, they allow the brain to bypass its usual filters, creating a window for deep structural change.

Interoception: Embodiment or Attention?

My research into interoception asks a fundamental question: Is the ability to feel our internal signals a measure of embodiment (how we occupy our bodies) or attention (where we place our focus)?

When working with plant medicines, we see a massive shift in interoceptive awareness. The “Vine of the Soul” forces the brain to attend to internal signals—heart rate, respiration, and somatic tension—that are usually ignored. This is the first step toward regaining authority over the self. By sharpening our internal attention, we move from a state of disconnection to a state of true embodiment.

Interoceptive Yoga: The Pragmatic Container

While the medicine provides the “reset,” Interoceptive Yoga provides the framework for long-term power. In my practice, we use specific movements and breathwork to map the sensations revealed during these states.

  • Somatic Mapping: Using yoga to identify where stress or “noise” is held in the body.
  • Neural Retraining: Practicing the discipline of observing internal shifts without judgment, which strengthens the insular cortex—the brain’s interoceptive hub.
  • Biological Harmony: Creating a system where the mind and body communicate with absolute clarity and efficiency.

By combining the biological opening provided by the vine with the rigorous discipline of Interoceptive Yoga, we move past surface-level symptoms. We achieve a state of functional health where the individual has the power to regulate their own internal world.
